About CSWE

Founded in 1952, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is the national association representing social work education in the United States. Its members include over 800 accredited baccalaureate and master’s degree social work programs, as well as individual social work educators, practitioners, and agencies dedicated to advancing quality social work education. Through its many initiatives, activities, and centers, CSWE supports quality social work education and provides opportunities for leadership and professional development, so that social workers play a central role in achieving the profession’s goals of social and economic justice. CSWE’s Commission on Accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as the sole accrediting agency for social work education in the United States and its territories.

Mission

CSWE is a national association of social work education programs and individuals that ensures and enhances the quality of social work education for a professional practice that promotes individual, family, and community well-being, and social and economic justice. CSWE pursues this mission in higher education by setting and maintaining national accreditation standards for baccalaureate and master’s degree programs in social work, by promoting faculty development, by engaging in interprofessional and international collaborations, and by advocating for social work education and research.

The Council on Social Work Education Minority Fellowship Program (MFP) Master's Fellowship is designed to reduce health disparities and improve healthcare outcomes of diverse populations by increasing the number of culturally competent behavioral health professionals. Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), the MSW fellowship supports final year and/or advance standing Master of Social Work students who are committed to providing mental health services to underserved minority communities.

MFP fellowships are contingent upon funding from SAMSHA which is anticipated to be awarded in Summer 2024. 

Submit to CSWE EPAS Curricular Guide Proposal Form

Thank you for your interest in creating a curricular guide as part of the EPAS Curricular Guide Resource Series. Curricular Guides are used as an educational resource in various settings, particularly in the classroom. Please read the following guidelines to understand the curricular guide development process. 

Curricular Guides are created jointly with Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) staff and task force participants, led by two co-chairs and nine competency chairs. Task force members can be selected by CSWE staff and co-chairs or by an open call. Task force participants may include CSWE members, social work professionals, and/or interdisciplinary professionals. 

Each guide takes approximately one year to create with copyediting, printing, and promotion of the guide completed by CSWE. Curricular Guides are grant-funded, costing approximately $45,000- $50,000 to produce. CSWE recommends proposers identify or already have a funding source; CSWE may supplement additional grant sources on a case-by-case basis. 

Use this form to propose a curricular guide. CSWE administration will review the form and contact you within 2 weeks of review.

 Submit your ADEI curricular resources! 

CSWE invites members to submit curricular resources related to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI).  These crowd-sourced submissions will be housed on the CSWE website and available to members as a repository of resources, such as ADEI-related readings, activities, projects, or case studies. 


The 2022 Educational Policies and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) affirms and strengthens the enduring commitment of social work education to principles of ADEI. 

CSWE continues to support social work programs in developing a workforce of social workers who are knowledgeable about the ways positionality, power, privilege, and difference affect practice areas, and how social workers challenge systems of oppression that affect diverse populations.

Submit to 2024 Site Visitor Application

New, as well as former site visitors, must apply, be appointed, and attend training to be certified and eligible for future visit assignments. Current site visitors only need to reapply at the end of their appointed 3-year term.

Overview

CSWE-accredited baccalaureate and master's social work programs host site visits as an integral part of the reaffirmation process. Site visitors conduct visits to programs on behalf of the CSWE Board of Accreditation (BOA). The role of the site visitor is to be an objective gatherer of information to inform reaffirmation decisions.
Site visitors are expected to conduct at least one site visit every two academic years, however, typically site visitors conduct one visit per year based on need and availability. Visits are conducted in-person or virtually.

Eligibility
 The applicant must:

  • be a full- or part-time social work faculty member at a CSWE-accredited or candidate social work program; 
  • possess at least three years of teaching experience in a CSWE-accredited social work program; 
  • be willing to conduct at least one site visit every two academic years; and 
  • be an active CSWE member (included for faculty and administrators of CSWE member programs). Click link to activate individual CSWE membership.

Application Materials
 Applicants that are eligible and interested in applying to become a certified site visitor must complete the site visitor application.

Within the application portal, applicants will:

  • respond to a brief set of questions (including a statement of interest);
  • upload CV; and 
  • upload a letter of support from their program’s chief administrator (e.g., dean, chair); that would support the time necessary to devote to site visitor trainings and visit commitments. If the applicant is the program's chief administrator, a letter of support should be provided from an institutional administrator (e.g., provost). If you are unable to obtain a letter of support from your program’s chief administrator by April 30, 2024, at 11:59:59 PM ET then please upload a note stating when you estimate you will receive this letter of support. Once obtained, please email to Alyson Balfour, Accreditation Volunteer Coordinator, adurant@cswe.org and then your application will be considered complete.

Application Review 

CSWE accreditation staff evaluate applications based on applicant qualifications and to ensure a diverse and well-rounded group of volunteers, considering, but not limited to the following: number of visits in the upcoming reaffirmation cycle(s), geographic diversity, institutional auspice (e.g., minority-serving institution, research/teaching focus), social work program options, size, program foci, and CSWE’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Policy Statement.

Appointments
Applicants will be notified of a decision by mid-June 2024. Site visitors are appointed to 3-year terms of service (July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2027), with the option to renew appointment at the expiration of the term. 

Orientation and Training
To be assigned to a visit, appointed applicants are required to attend orientation and training, even if previously trained. Appointed individuals must attend one virtual orientation (Summer 2024) and one virtual training (Fall 2024).

Orientation Dates:  Wednesday, July 24, 2024 3-4pm ET or Tuesday, August 6, 2024 3-4pm ET

Training Dates: Thursday, November 7, 2024 12-3pm ET or Friday, November 15, 2024 12-3pm ET

Periodic trainings may be required of site visitors to remain current on the EPAS, BOA interpretations, and site visit operations.

Submit to 2024 Fellowship Review Committee Application

Overview

The Fellowship Review Committee (FRC) serves as the primary review body for post-master’s social work fellowship programs seeking initial or continued accreditation and is responsible for making accreditation decision recommendations to the CSWE Board of Accreditation (BOA). As post-master’s social work fellowship programs are practice-based and not degree programs at universities or colleges, the FRC is comprised of social work educators and practitioners which ensures a peer-review based accreditation process for these practice-based programs.

Eligibility
 The applicant must be a social work practitioner and/or educator with fellowship education experience.

CSWE BSW and MSW Program Director Academy
 

Now Recruiting our 7th Class!

The CSWE Program Director Academy is designed for new and recent program directors who are typically transitioning from faculty to administrative roles, often without prior training or experience in management and leadership inside or outside of the social work academy. For the 7th Cohort, space will be limited to up to 30 participants.
 

This program is open to baccalaureate and master’s program directors who have been in their position for 3 or fewer years. Applicants must be from a CSWE accredited member program to apply. If you have been in your position longer than 3 years and are interested in applying, please contact LeadershipInstitute@cswe.org prior to submitting an application.


Program Details and Participant Requirements
The program requires a 1-year commitment and includes participation in the following:
A Virtual Summer Leadership Institute on July 9, 11, 16, and 18, 2024, 3 hours each day: 1 pm - 4 pm EST.
 

  • This virtual workshop with cohort participants is designed to build and strengthen administrative and leadership capacity with a focus on management competencies and leadership development for the program director role.
  • National leaders will speak on the following topics: strategic management, skills of supervision, communication, effective meetings, leadership self-assessment, and resource development as it relates to job function.
  • Networking opportunities will be available with other BSW and MSW program directors across the country.

A full-day Leadership Development Institute held at the CSWE Annual Program Meeting (APM) on October 24, 2024, in Kansas City, MO.
 

Online modules, webinars, and virtual networking opportunities through the CSWE Learning Academy in Spring 2025. Participants will apply and integrate core concepts and competencies from the program to initiatives within their home institutions.

Quarterly virtual Check-ins held on October 10, 2024, at 1 pm - 2pm EST, February 20, 2025, at 1 pm - 2pm EST, and June 26, 2025, at 1 pm - 2 pm EST. Virtual check-ins will be led by CSWE staff members and invited speakers and provide an opportunity for cohort participants to share resources, engage concerning programmatic concerns, and brainstorm the application of best leadership strategies in their programs.

Program Completion Reception and Certificate Presentation at the 2025 APM in Denver, CO on October 23, 2025.

Registration Fee and Other Expenses
The total tuition for the CSWE Program Director Academy is $1,500. This registration fee includes curriculum materials, Learning Academy modules/webinars, and registration for the 2024 Leadership Development Institute on October 24, 2024, in Kansas City, MO, but not the 2024 APM registration. Once an applicant is selected to participate in the program, the registration fee of $1,500 is due by July 5, 2024. Any additional expenses are the responsibility of the participant or college/school.

Application Instructions and Requirements
Receipt deadline for all materials is Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 11:59 PM (ET). Applications are reviewed by the CSWE Council on Leadership Development and CSWE staff and results will be announced by Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
